held its second annual Wenham Public Safety Day on Saturday July 25 at Pingree Park. The day began with a fire engine parade leading to Pingree Park where children and families enjoyed numerous events and demonstrations presented by the Wenham Fire Co. The Public Safety Day is the Wenham Fire Co. ’s largest fundraiser of the year.

“I have a friend whose dad is chief and I thought it might be interesting. I like helping people” Hammell a 2008 graduate of Howell High School said. The class was the idea of Chief Andy Pless and was led by Firefighter Drew Johnson. The class held last week gave 12 students ages 14-18 an introduction to fire services such as emergency dispatch services and extrication.

It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Mackinac Bridge Authority annually makes about 30 of these bridge treks available to nonprofit organizations who use them as fundraisers. I got my trip last January at the annual auction conducted by the Michigan Press Association Foundation which raises money for scholarships for young journalism students. The auction came a couple of weeks before our wedding anniversary and about a week after my older son chastised me for unimaginative and predictable gifts.
