Twister turned metro lives upside down
Atlanta Journal Constitution – May 18, 2008
Firefighters Red Cross workers and Salvation Army members offered services. But they were clearly outnumbered by an army of contractors — in bright golf shirts and matching SUVs — who prowled around the neighborhood doling out business cards and offering quick assistance for a good price. Freeman had a pocket full of cards and fliers — even one with a photo of Jordan’s damaged Jaguar taken from an AJC photo gallery — for his consideration. But for most of the week even if he wanted to hire one of them he couldn’t. On April 10 Freeman was informed by his insurance company that his policy was being canceled based on credit report information. Freeman said he never missed a payment has no bankruptcies or liens and can’t figure out what the insurance company found. “They just cut me off like that after four and a half years” he said.

One gallery showcases Pulitzer Prize-winning news and feature photos over the last five decades. Many of the images are blown up to poster size accompanied by details about how the photo was taken or thoughts by the photographer about the scene. In keeping with other displays in the Newseum this gallery includes small glass cases mounted next to some photos with the camera used to take that image. One case for example holds the Leica M-2 used by Nick Ut to take his dramatic photo of a naked Vietnamese girl running toward him after her village had been hit by napalm dropped from an American plane. Visitors to the gallery can also watch video interviews with Ut and many other photographers talking about their work. Although many of the images among the Pulitzer Prize-winning works show the stark drama of human events the words next to some of the photos tell more about how the act of making the photo affected the photographer who was just doing his or her job. One image taken by South African photojournalist Kevin Carter in 1993 shows a tiny black child in Sudan bent low to the ground after collapsing from hunger.
