As a director of the Platform Artists Group founded almost 20years ago he helps curate shows in the Degraves Street Subwaycabinets throwing a launch every month for a new series ofwork. So the question is are you invited? In Melbourne’s greatlyhyped tradition these events can be hard to find. But that’s moreabout the way the independent gallery scene has evolved than anyattempt to remain mysterious or exclusive. Launches are a way ofreaching an audience and fostering a network in the same way thatartist-run initiatives (ARIs) are about making room for emergingartists. They just happen where the rent is low – or where there’sno rent at all. So we have a gallery in a subway in a set of mailboxes (Mailbox141) in a display cabinet outside the Majorca Building (run byPlatform) on a bunch of outdoor light boxes (Citylights) on theseventh floor of the Nicholas Building (Blindside) in an old hotel(the Carlton Hotel Gallery) in a converted camera repair shop(Neon Parc) and in a wall cavity (20×30 at Pushka). Not all of these spaces are strictly artist-run but they haveevolved from a long tradition of finding room… Launches are a way ofreaching an audience and fostering a network in the same way thatartist-run initiatives (ARIs) are about making room for emergingartists. If it’s in front of you use it.
