Dinh Q Lê’s solo exhibition ‘After the War’ is a tale of…
San Diego Union Tribune – Feb 14, 2008
His visually complicated and painstakingly crafted photographic works are on view at SDSU's University Art Gallery. So is a large-scale video installation “The Imaginary Country” on which he collaborated with fellow artists Tuan Andrew Nguyan and Ha Thuc Phu Nam. This solo exhibition curated by University Art Gallery director Tina Yapelli is called “After the War. ” He's shown in Los Angeles consistently but never in San Diego. DETAILS“After the War” photographs by Dinh Q. Lê When: Through March 1Where: University Art Gallery San Diego State University 5500 Campanile Drive the College AreaTickets: Free (parking permits available in the art department office)Phone: (619) 594-5171nline:… His style of picture-making has the effect of making even a familiar image appear as if it's emerging from a world of visuals – separate from the daily torrent of photographs in print on television and online. The war is receding into the past for Vietnam as well as the United States of course; Vietnam is becoming part of the global economy in large part because of investment by multinational corporations. Lê aims a questioning eye on Vietnam's present in photo-weavings like “Untitled (SPAM). ” The familiar typography of “SPAM” seems to be shoving the hammer and sickle to the right side of the picture. It's a metaphor for one set of values superseding another obvious in its message but visually striking nonetheless. Lê carries this idea of mingling past and present into his collaborative video work “The Imaginary Country. ” Across three large screens you see layers of images of people with their backs to us walking into the sea.

They can also view bird photos taken by participants during the count and send in their own digital images for the online photo gallery and contest. In 2007 Great Backyard Bird Count participants made history breaking records for the number of birds reported and the number of checklists. Participants sent in 81203 checklists tallying 11082387 birds of 613 species. “Literally there has never been a more detailed snapshot of a continental bird-distribution profile in history” said John Fitzpatrick Director of the Cornell Lab of rnithology. “Imagine scientists 250 years from now being able to compare these data with their own!”Already the count results show how the numbers of some bird species have changed in recent years such as a decline in Northern Pintails and an increase in Hooded Mergansers consistent with trends from the Christmas Bird Count and Breeding Bird Survey.
