Gallery announces a capital gain
Toronto Star – Feb 21, 2008
Peter Goddard Visual Arts Columnist Fidel Castro only just retired and already there’s talk about Cuban post-capitalism. Actually Postcapital (2006) a signature work by Havana’s Carlos Garaicoa is the newly acquired centrepiece of an in-depth collection of contemporary Cuban art the Art Gallery of ntario announced yesterday. "What’s extraordinary is that the museum is allowed to focus on the art of Cuba at this incredibly vital moment in that country’s evolution" says David Moos the AG’s curator of contemporary art who’s been working on the initiative the past two years with Magda Gonzalez Mora an independent Havana-based curator. An elaborate wood metal and plaster sculpture depicting a miniature city fashioned from famous international buildings as they appear on national currencies Postcapital is the first Cuban art acquisition in the museum’s history. The AG announcement the day after Castro publicized his resignation as Cuban president was pure coincidence insist all parties involved. Postcapital will be unveiled at the AG reopening this fall as the forerunner to the Sherritt Collection named after the Toronto-based mining company Canada’s leading investor in Cuba… He’s still forbidden entry into the United States. Large wall-mounted photographs showing a number of Havana’s historic buildings before their collapse or demolition were in the artist’s exhibition at the Royal ntario Museum in 2006. Next to a photo of the destruction was one indicating the gap left in the cityscape. Winds of change in Cuban politics may have mitigated Garaicoa’s work to some degree however. RM visitors also saw one of his "utopian cities" as the artist describes his mini post-Castro sculpted urban paradises. Postcapital’s Canadian connection is a section that recalls the Parliament Buildings as they appear on the Canadian $10 bill. "Postcapital presents the possibility of a world without different currencies" suggests a note from the AG.
