Grammy’s best new artist is a 24-year-old Brit with a towering beehive hairdo and a style that channels classic ’60s soul through songs that uncomfortably echo her turbulent offstage life. Given the way she appeared to be unraveling on a daily basis Winehouse seemed in coy and teasing good health Sunday singing “Rehab” from a London club. In the evening’s most stunning surprise Herbie Hancock won album of the year for his instrumental jazz tribute to Joni Mitchell “River: The Joni Letters.
