The diversity on offer might be stunning in any other setting. But for regulars of Wine Spectator’s annual Wine Experience now in its 27th year this is simply what they’ve come to expect. The magazine’s three-day wine extravaganza held ct. 25–27 kicked off with the first of two sold-out evening Grand Tastings.

A protean abstract painter with a dire drinking habit de Kooning put aside the bottle in 1980 and began a new phase one that still divides experts. But as is evident from the more than 40 monumental paintings most dating from about 1979 to 1986 between these shows he painted some indisputably magnificent pictures in his final working decade. (He did his last work in 1990; he died in 1997. ) Picture for picture the L&M Arts exhibition is stronger: it is more tightly focused with a handpicked selection of some of the best of late de Kooning… Focused on a single modern family art collection this show weaves like a DNA strand through the Met’s Chinese painting galleries. The 40 examples of painting and calligraphy belonged to the writer and scholar Lin Yutang (1895-1976) and his descendants who have divided their time between China and the West.
