Peter Goddard CLSING TDAYCast by Paula Jean Cowan (pen Studio Gallery 401 Richmond St. W Suite 104) has all the makings of a terrific television daytime drama. Here’s the pitch: We’ve got women and their animals bonding ? or not bonding even better ? all the while both are nursing their injuries. Terrific right? At the very least it could be a segment on prah. To her credit Cowan doesn’t make it that easy… the idea that humans tend to project thoughts desires and motivations onto other people animals or even objects. "To this end Cowan goes positively medieval with our sense of proportion giving her photo-based images of people and pets the same scale and presence making equal their importance in the artist’s contemporary cosmology. Fleeting Face (A Space Gallery 401 Richmond St. W Suite 110) deals with the central issue we face with our face ? identity. Two artists in the show deal with identity’s current flashpoint ? the passport. (Five of the artists are Toronto-based.

“I hated myself fat. My daughter could not recognise me and insisted that the person in the photo was not me” said Yam who shed the excess weight weeks after shooting ended. Yam was speaking at a ceremony where he and his wife SK-II ambassador and international model Qiqi unveiled the SK-II photo gallery at the Suria KLCC concourse here on Thursday evening. Qiqi – one of the most photographed faces in Asia – shared tips with the audience on how to maintain crystal-clear skin. When asked how she maintained a good relationship with her husband Qiqi said Yam was very supportive and always made her laugh. “We also like to watch football together. We support different teams so we have fun debating and cheering for our respective teams” she said.

Even so he’s his harshest critic (other critics are thin on theground usually referring vaguely to a self-consciousness in thework or the occasional clumsy base). He looks back at TheMessenger for example equivocally. “It was a major work to have at a young age” he admits – aphoto of him in front of the NGV moat with McCaughey shows theyoung Bartlett looking bashful but thrilled. While there was a period afterwards when that sculpture”concerned” him Bartlett points out that the necessarily longperiod of reflection has made him grow fonder of the piece. “It was an early work but it was important work” he says. “They are all stepping stones to somewhere important links andphases. ” He reckons The Messenger has been given new lifesince it was relocated to the rear moat after the gallery’s 2003redevelopment… It’s just the way he works. Geoffrey Bartlett is at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australiauntil ctober 14. Geoffrey Bartlett: New Work is at the JohnBuckley Gallery from September 5 to November 22.
