Compared to the stratospheric prices?running into crores of rupees?of the art world some of the most expensive photography by the likes of Raghubir Singh at the higher end costs less than Rs20 lakh. But fine art photography is slowly opening up to increased demand and visibility. As more and more gallery spaces open up to photography exhibitions there?s greater acceptance of the form as a work of art. Foss and Gandi plan to open a dedicated gallery in Mumbai by the end of July with their first gallery exhibition showing US-based photographer Annu Palakunnathu Matthew (her entire portfolio of 12 prints is estimated at a little more than Rs2 lakh) scheduled for 21 August. ?There has been a lot of positive response from collectors and people who can?t afford to buy installation art? says Foss. ” For commercial work Lam uses digital as her clients prefer it that way. Her most memorable working experience was in Phnom Penh Cambodia where she had to capture the lives of Cambodians for a regional travel publication. “We had to do a photo shoot of people living in a landfill only a few minutes away from the city centre. It was an eye-opener to witness the living conditions of these people as they live off the mountain of rubbish thrown by people like you and me. “It made me aware that there are many people living like this in the world. It’s as if their lives are as dispensable as the rubbish they live on. “This is one of the reasons why I am drawn to photography as I am able to create awareness and stir emotions through my work… She also runs a newly opened bistro named Kokopelli Travellers Bistro in Section 11 Petaling Jaya with her husband Ariff Awaluddin. “We recently opened this restaurant as my husband an artist loves cooking. This bistro also serves as an art gallery a venue for upcoming artists to showcase their work. We’ve been in their shoes and we know how hard the struggle to get acknowledged. Through our bistro hopefully their work can be recognised. ” Soraya’s work has given her many memorable opportunities including photographing prominent figures like Queen Elizabeth II and the late Yasser Arafat. She spoke of her recent project entitled Angin an exhibition on the traditional folk arts of Kelantan at the Petronas Gallery.

Each explores the complex cultural identity of China from commercial elements of this new global economy to the social and economic implications of the urban density found there. Shek Kip Mei Estate Hong Kong’s oldest public housing estate is composed of 100 rooms each closet-like in size at only 100 square feet and was built in response to a devastating fire in the 1950s that left thousands homeless. 100 x 100 captures the residents of this housing complex who are almost enveloped by the diminishing space around them their belongings stacked to the ceiling. Michael Wolf’s photographs offer a glimpse of daily life within Hong Kong’s “Architecture of Density” (Wolf’s earlier series) and present an alternate and more human perspective on the socio-economic state of Hong Kong… Equally these images engage the nature of art and representation itself acting as metapictures much like the copy of the famous Magritte painting shown in one the photographs that proclaims “this is not a pipe. The Munich-born artist grew up in the United States studying at UC Berkeley before earning a degree from the University of Essen in Germany.
