” * * * Berkeley painter Travis Eiden calls himself a “conceptual realist” influenced by among others Caravaggio and Chuck Close. But there are plenty more influences on the way into the back-room gallery at Eclectix Patricia Zemanek’s funky shop at the top of Fairmount Avenue in El Cerrito. The door to the gallery is framed by a faux leopard coat a black cocktail dress and a rack of vintage purses; the shop is filled with plastic novelties vintage ceramics Hawaiian shirts and LP albums such as the indelible “Quiet Village: The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny. ” Zemanek contacted Eiden for the current group show (which closes today) through the Academy of Art University in San Francisco from which he graduated last year. His own one-man show is opening at one of the university’s galleries at 79 New Montgomery St. Eclectix’s next show “Kool Kidz” runs May 4-27.

For Framingham resident E. Linda Poras the biennial Massachusetts Artists exhibit at the Brush Art Gallery showcases deserving artists from across the state. "There’s a great range this year of work from abstract to figurative to photo-realism" said Poras the gallery’s executive director. Juror Raphaela Platow chief curator of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University chose a widely diverse selection of paintings drawings prints photos and media from 120 submissions. Robin Freedenfeld paints wilting roses with a hypnotic hyper-realism and Christin Couture depicts a child in eerie ominous tones. In a series of subversive self-portraits Deborah Bohnert portrays herself with deadpan humor as "Fairy Princess Debby" with pink clip-on wings and a bad wig. In one of the show’s most singular images photographer Ann Isaak-Ross captures an enigmatic scene of a mysterious woman who merges into the landscape… Containing text and computer-enhanced images books with enigmatic titles like "Sacred Megaliths" "Vengeance" and "Joseph and his Family Going to Egypt" conjure questions of what’s real and what’s from the artist’s imagination. Visitors however ought to remember the painting for which the museum is named is actually a remarkable reproduction of the 1873 masterpiece now hanging in the Louvre. Since opening in Lowell in July 2005 the 119 Gallery has earned its reputation for hosting cutting-edge electronic media shows as well as live music dance and video performances. Curator Mary Ann Kearns said the gallery which she and director Walter Wright founded 15 years ago as the 911 Gallery in Indianapolis showcases artists "at the contemporary end of the spectrum" who incorporate emerging technologies into their performances. After moving to Boston in 1996 it relocated to Lowell in 2005 taking its name from its new address at 119 Chelmsford St. "We were happy to find affordable space in a community that embraced and supported us" said Kearns. The gallery is presently hosting "Memory of a Looking Glass" an "interactive immersive experience" by sound artist Andrea Pensado and visual artist Greg Kowalski.
